Statistical Parameters of Grain Size Distribution of sediments from Artists beach – Aracaju – SE
Keywords:
grain size, beach face, river mouthAbstract
The beaches are no vegetated, unconsolidated sediments deposits; their sediments are characterized by size, shape and composition. The Artists beach is situated near Sergipe river mouth and presents a variable morphology due to erosive and depositional processes. This study aims to characterize the sediment from Artists beach - Aracaju - Sergipe. The field work was taken from october 2008 to june 2012. A total of 186 surface sediment samples were taken in 6 transects perpendicular to the shore at intermediate beach face. Samples were rinsed with fresh water, dried and divided into sub-samples for dry sieving analysis. Grain size distributions were determined using the SYSGRAN package, which provided the grain size, standard deviation (sorting), skewness and kurtosis. The sediment grain size distribution from Artistas beach ranged mainly from fine to medium grained sand, moderately sorted, near symmetrical and fine (positively) skewed with a mesokurtic distribution. This study showed that sediments from investigated beach have similar characteristics to those of fluvial sediments, showing the influence of Sergipe river mouth as a sediment source. The beach sediments characterization can help beach restoration projects for that’s one under erosive processes. Thus, this work is useful for the environmental planning of the Artistas beach.
