This study aims to identify the coastline configuration changes and its relationship to human occupation in the Atalaia Velha and Mosqueiro, Aracaju-SE. The methodology included coastline and human occupation multitemporal mapping in ArcGIS 9.3.1, and field works. This study showed that the coastline of Atalaia Velha and Mosqueiro was heavily altered from 1965 to 2008. After coastal deposition events occurred in Atalaia Velha from 1965 to 2003 and in Mosqueiro from 1965 to 1984, human occupation expanded over progradated areas. However, during 2005, 2007 and 2008, the coastline retreat caused the partial and/or total destruction of anthropogenic structures, producing socio-economic losses. This work serves as subsidies to urban and environmental planning in the studied area.
