Abstract

In this study, the WQIi, calculated based on the ionic composition, was used to evaluate the water quality of the Jacarecica II, Díonísio Machado and Três Barras reservoirs, which contain different concentrations of total dissolved solids. The WQIi and the classification of water for human consumption (in parentheses) were 24,2 (excellent) for Jacarecica II; 132 (poor) for Dionísio Machado and 685 (inadequate) for Três Barras. For the same samples, the IQA(NSF) values developed by the National Sanitation Foundation and the classification (in parentheses) were 74 (good) for Jacarecica II; 64 (good) for Dionísio and 59 (good) for Três Barras. The results showed that the WQI (NSF) is not suitable for assessing the water quality of samples with total dissolved solids greater than 500 mg L-1, making the WQIi a viable alternative to be used in these cases.
