Modification of the sorptive characteristics of sugarcane bagasse for removing methylene blue from aqueous solutions

The sugar cane bagasse has been studied as a biosorbent to remove the methylene blue aqueous solution through the batch method. In this study, bagasse was modified by sulphuric acid to enhance sorption capacity. The characterization was made by infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and point of zero charge (pHpzc). The effects of pH and dye concentration on adsorption capacities were studied. Methylene blue uptake was favorable at pH 8,0 for natural bagasse and, pH 10,0 to modified bagasse. The adsorption models of Sips and Temkin showed better affinity with the experimental data of natural and modified bagasse respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity found for the natural bagasse was 31,791 mg g-1 and 38,227 mg g-1 for the modified bagasse.Downloads
