Abstract

Species of the Stylosanthes Sw. genus play an important role as plant genetic resources due to their forage potential and adaptation to adverse climatic conditions, particularly in semi-arid regions. However, further studies are required to better characterize the genus in terms of its biochemical attributes. This study aimed to perform the biochemical characterization of Stylosanthes spp. accessions from the Forage Germplasm Bank of the State University of Feira de Santana (FGB-UEFS). Five accessions and the BRS Bela cultivar were selected for analyses of soluble proteins, total and reducing sugars, as well as chlorophyll a, b, and total indices. Significant differences were observed in soluble protein content, with the highest value recorded in accession P133 (5.564 mg.g⁻¹ FW). The levels of reducing and soluble sugars varied among accessions, with the cultivar showing the highest content (1.739 mg.g⁻¹ FW and 13.39 mg.g⁻¹ FW, respectively). In comparison, accession P133 (0.927 mg.g⁻¹ FW) and BGF 10-024 (0.752 mg.g⁻¹ FW) had lower levels of reducing sugars, while BGF 11-001 (9.038 mg.g⁻¹ FW) exhibited lower levels of total soluble sugars. The chlorophyll a index was significantly lower in BGF 11-001 (17.52), with a reduction of 45.47% compared to the BRS Bela cultivar (32.13). The total chlorophyll index was also higher in the cultivar, with a 47.51% difference. These results suggest that the BRS Bela cultivar exhibits homogeneous responses, whereas accession BGF 11-001 shows limited potential for use in breeding programs.
