Ribeirão Conquistinha is an important tributary of Rio Grande and its sub-basin is influenced by urban occupation. The environmental quality of this sub-basin was evaluated using benthic macroinvertebrates as bioindicators, as well as physical-chemical, microbiological and Rapid Assessment Protocol. The results showed better water quality in riparian forest regions, reinforcing its importance in protecting the ecosystem. The significant reduction in quality was observed in the sites that received industrial and domestic effluents, showing the deleterious effect of these substances on the biological community. The sites with rural activities presented intermediate water quality. Thus, the results reinforce the use of bioindicators for an integrated analysis of water quality, using a high degree of contamination of the sub-basin and suggesting the occurrence of environmental sequences and metabolism in the ecosystem and aquatic life.
