Abstract

The struggle for land in Brazil has intensified over the last two decades. Led by social movements and organizations, land occupations by the landless have spread throughout the Brazilian territory, extending from the agricultural expansion zones along distant borders to the populous and industrialized regions such as São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Paraná and Minas Gerais. Almost always, resulting land conflicts have been characterized by violence, administered by the large land estate owners and their hired gunmen against the occupants, with the benediction or connivance of the judicial system and the State. In this article, we map the land conflicts in the state of Sergipe that have occurred over the last 20 years in agricultural regions, highlighting the principal locations of conflict, the main actors involved, and the way in which they were dealt with by the State.
