Andrological parameters evaluation of Holstein and Guzerat bulls subjected to semi-arid conditions
Keywords:
cattle, semen and fertility.Abstract
The cattle industry has a relevant interest in the Brazilian economy due in large part to the productive chains of meat and milk. The reproductive efficiency of a bull can be estimated by clinical assessment of the animal and by the breeding soundness examination mainly to maximize the fertility of the herd, providing the disposal of infertile bulls and possibly select those with higher reproductive efficiency. Clinical and seminal evaluation becomes essential to classification and prediction of reproductive function. The study was conducted at the Agronomic Institute of Pernambuco (IPA), in São Bento do Una and Serra Talhada where there were evaluated 10 Holstein bulls and 14 Guzerat bulls from May to June 2013. The results indicated differences in the variables of scrotal circumference, testicular consistency, vigor and sperm motility between breeds It can be concluded that dietary factors play a major role on testicular development and performance and consequently in spermogram.
