Chemical characterization of the tinctures and dry extracts of medicinal plants of the Cerrado by thin layer chromatography

Medicinal plants endemic to the Cerrado biome are widely used in the form of tinctures and extracts, but analytical methods to validate those pharmaceutical formulations are still scarce. The aim of this study was to identify chemical markers to investigate the seasonal influence on the chemical composition of dyes and extracts of 20 species endemic to the Cerrado biome. Dried hydroalcoholic extracts and dyes were analyzed by comparative thin-layer chromatography (CCDC) on silica gel F254 plates using 11 specific chemical markers. The retention factor (Rf) of chemical markers was used as reference foridentifying the substances present in the investigated samples. For most of the studied species, extracts of plants collected during the dry season showed higher yieldsand flavonoids were the most frequent compounds found in the tinctures and extracts. Only the extracts and tinctures of Achyrocline
satureoides, Lychnophora ericoides and Zeyheria montana showed distinct chemical profile considering the harvest season. The methodology used was efficient and proper to establish the chemical quality control of medicinal plant species from the Cerrado.
