Instruct to civilize: In the Name of the Christian Faith

The present work has as a goal, to deepen the studies about History of the Education in Sergipe, lookingfor develop an analysis about the influence of the Church in the Brazilians education. The studies are anintegrant part of the progress research about “Cidade Nova” magazine and the practical on education.That Magazine has bases in the Catholicism and presents in its diverse pages articles about education. Tounderstand better the relation between the Church and educative area. In this research, it was necessary toverify the participation of the institution in the educational process. Thus, through the study of a vastbibliography on the subject, I elaborate an analysis, that displays a boarding about the participation of theChurch in the educational process and the educational instruction of the Christian people, as well as Imake a boarding about the use of printed matters as transmitting vehicle of instruction and propagation ofthe Christian faith. It was possible to observe that the Church has an excellent participation in theeducational process of the Brazilian, either establishing schools, participating of on state agencies to theeducational area or even though through the printed matters, that become transmitting vehicles of theeducational speeches. The New Cultural History bases, through Norbert Elias’ concepts of civilization, aswell as of Roger Chartier’s appropriation and representation one, gave us subsides to identify that thechurch was interested in instruct, civilize the population. At the same time it was possible to observe theappropriation and representation of the educational speech propagated by the printed matters Catholics.Downloads
