Competitiveness in the metalmechanic industry in the northeast region of Rio Grande do Sul as a result of the implementation of ISO 14001

In the current scenery, environmental sustainability and globalization require that organizations have a competitive market to work. The ISO 14001 is recognized worldwide as a means to control costs, reduce risk, improve performance and build competitiveness for organizations. The standard recognizes organizations that care about their profitability as well as with the management of environmental impacts. Against this background, this study aims to investigate the competitive advantages after implementation of ISO 14001 certification, through a multiple case study with a qualitative approach in large enterprises of the metalmechanical sector in the northeast of Rio Grande do Sul was therefore possible to identify the internal and external gains after certification. The results were identified in the companies surveyed unanimously reductions in risks of accidents and legal sanctions. The companies have economy or reducing consumption of raw materials, waste, water and electricity. In the suppliers to the automotive line, certification aided the maintenance of existing customers and attracting new customers.Downloads
