Abstract

At Maranhão few records of neotropical otters have been reported in scientific literature. This information lack limits the basic knowledge acquisition of ecology and species conservation status in the state. This work aims to present the first photographic and trampling record of the Lontra longicaudis in the state of Maranhão and from this to increase the knowledge about the distribution of this species in Brazil. The record in question was made in the city of Monção, inserted into mesoregion northern Maranhão and microregion Baixada Maranhense through a dead specimen found at roadside. The registry location is characterized by the large amount of artificial lakes that are part of a complex fishing lakes. This work extends the knowledge about the distribution of this species and highlights the need for more studies in the region.
