Abstract

The municipality of Camaçari, located in the metropolitan area of the city of Salvador, presents different situations regarding coastline occupation and represents one of the main vectors of urban growth in the state of Bahia. Jauá beach is one of the most intensely used beaches of this municipality???, especially due to the easy access and to the proximity to Salvador. The main objective of the present study was to characterize some of the environmental and infrastructure conditions of Jauá beach and evaluate its carrying capacity and the ecosystem services offered. Sector 1 of Jauá beach presented a level of use above its carrying capacity, contributing to the compromise in the offer of ecosystem services, especially those of regulation and support. On the other hand, in sector 2, where natural environments predominate, a greater diversification and quality of ecosystem services was observed, including those of regulation and support, and those of provisioning, information, culture and leisure. Nevertheless, this sector presented a high level of pollution by marine litter.
