This study aims to analyze the process of institutionalizing the teaching of Spanish in Brazil through educational legislation, from 1919 to 2005. The period of crop to be studied was chosen based upon two important events: the first is the exam to select the first professor of Spanish at the Colegio Pedro II,Antenor Nascentes, and the second is the approval of Law 11.161 of August the 5th 2005, which established the obligation of offering Spanish in high school and optional for the school from 5th to 8th grades (currently the 6th to 9th grade). We will analyze the educational, political and cultural proposal of the establishment of Spanish teaching in public education in Brazil. Thus, the motivations for the implantation of Spanish teaching in Colégio Pedro II, the reform of Capanema in the 1940s, the LDB's of 1961, 1971 and 1996, and the new "Spanish Law", as it is being called the Law 11.161/2005 that makes mandatory the offer of Spanish language in high schools, will be analyzed in this work.
